Rhythm and Green’s Plaque
Commemorating: Benny Green
Street: Cleveland Street
A musical plaque for the second week in-a-row. This week, Jazz takes centre stage, with the legendary Benny Green. Something of a polymath, Green was not only a well-regarded saxophonist, but a writer and journalist and radio presenter. His radio show focusing on the classics of the Great American Songbook became something of a cult and fans picketed the BBC when it was dropped from the airwaves. Due to the outcry, the show was soon reinstated. A great all-round performer, Green spoke wittily at the funeral of fellow jazz legend Ronnie Scott in 1997.
Look out for Ronnie Scott’s, the home of British jazz on the Soho Pubs Walk every Sunday.
