Table No.10

Ann’ s off on a food bunberry this Saturday…

“Press coverage of the recent Downing St lunch for President Sarkozy and his wife concentrated on the clothes and the shoes – grey dress, kitten heels for Carla, black and white dress, high heels for Samantha. But of course what I really wanted to know was what they ate.

I can reveal that the menu was roast fillet of Cornish sea bass, parsley potatoes and seasonal vegetables followed by baked lemon tart and berry fruit compote. The wine was French – which seems a lost opportunity. Admittedly, the President is teetotal, but it would have been nice to see his face as his wife was offered a glass of Nyetimber Cuvee 2003, which beat off competition from Bollinger to be voted the world’s best sparkling wine in January.

The Sarkozys’ state visit in 2008 was more of a gastronomic challenge – the Queen offered them fillet of brill, noisette of lamb with artichokes, broad beans, carrots, cauliflower and potatoes, then rhubarb tart with vanilla cream. But Her Majesty gave them French wine, too. Who will be the first to make the French drink English sparkling wine in public?”

On Saturday, June 26th, it's Foodies' London – the West End. It goes at 10.45 am from Green ParkTube, the Green Park exit. Listen to a preview of Ann at work HERE.
