It's A London Thing No.61. The Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets Memorial

It’s a London Thing is our Wednesday series in which we turn the spotlight on a unique aspect of London – perhaps a curious shop, sometimes an eccentric restaurant, a hidden place, book or oddity. The subject matter will be different every week. The running theme, however, will remain constant: you have to come to London to enjoy it. It’s A London Thing.

Here’s Greenwich guide Ann with a unique London detail:

One of the series of panels showing the Seven Seas, in the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets Memorial at Tower Hill. Sculpted by Charles Wheeler, who was also responsible for Ariel on the Bank of England, and Earth & Water on the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall.

Lots of London Walks start at Tower Hill. Get there a few minutes early and go to admire this mermaid - and the other lovely panels which feature lots of fishy decoration.
